One of the amorphous silica, perlite will expand after being crushed and cooled. When heated at various temperatures between 900o to 1100o C its volume may increase four- to twenty-fold.
During dilation, perlite particles form white granules with minute cavities or pores. These surface pores trap the moisture on which plants thrive. Their irregular shape leaves air passages at the base of cultures providing optimum aeration.
